Transporting a piano is a task for experienced professionals
The piano is a unique, delicate musical instrument, and its safe transport from place to place requires specialist knowledge. Knowledge alone, however, is not enough, in addition to it, we have specialized equipment for special tasks and many years of experience in transporting all types of pianos.
Types of pianos
The piano is often confused with the grand piano. The main distinguishing difference of an upright piano from a grand piano is the position of the strings in relation to the ground. In pianos, the strings are arranged perpendicularly to it, and the keyboard instrument itself is vertical due to this arrangement of the strings. The taller the piano, the more sound it can produce. Pianos usually stand on four legs and are easier to transport because they take up less space. We divide them into four groups due to the dimensions of the instrument:
Spinet type piano
The smallest type of piano, often found in homes as an element that enhances the aesthetics of the room. An instrument of this type reaches dimensions from 91 to 102 cm in height. Due to its size and weight, it is the easiest to carry.
Console piano
It reaches sizes from 102 cm to 109 cm and is also easy to transport. Pianos of this type have a better sound than spinets.
Studio piano
The dimensions of this type of pianos range from 112 cm to even 122 cm in height. Thanks to their construction (longer strings than in the case of the two types mentioned above), they have a much better sound.
Upright piano
This type of piano starts from 124 cm and has the best sound. Upright is the so-called full-size piano, although it does not take up much space in the home. It also does not cause much difficulty when moving a few meters or transporting it to another city or abroad.
Types of grand pianos
In grand pianos, we deal with the parallel arrangement of the strings relative to the ground, which determines the size of the instrument in the horizontal plane much larger than in the case of pianos. Due to the size of pianos and unwieldy shapes, they are not easy to carry. In the case of transporting a grand piano, it is often necessary to dismantle some of its parts, which is why it is so important that specialized people with appropriate equipment take care of transporting this musical instrument.
Miniature grand piano
Don't be fooled by the name "miniature" - it's a large and heavy instrument ranging in size from 135 to 155 cm in length. In most cases, this type of piano is difficult to carry through door frames.
Cabinet grand piano
It reaches sizes from 155 cm to 180 cm in length. Due to its size, the option of disassembling some parts (e.g. legs) for the time of transfer is inevitable.
Salon grand piano
An instrument reaching a maximum length in the range of 180 to 210 cm. A heavy and beautiful instrument, which, as the name suggests, is often a prestigious decoration in salons. It causes many difficulties in transport. In order to safely transport it, it is necessary to use the help of professionals and the use of appropriate equipment.
Semi-concert grand piano
It is available in versions from 210 to 240 cm in length. Semi-concert, which is not yet the largest, but already huge and used not only in home but also on stage. There is no need to mention how difficult this giant is in the case of transport.
Concert grand piano
It is a real giant among pianos, which is also the greatest in its family. It is most often used by professional musicians during concerts, but it is also used in music rooms (studios?), and less often in apartments. Transporting this type of piano is a huge challenge that only professionals from Fortis can handle.
The division of pianos in English-speaking countries
The above division by size is the most common in Poland. In the English-language nomenclature there are the following types (from smallest):
- Baby grand (155 cm)
- Medium grand (170 cm)
- Living Room grand (180 cm)
- Parlor grand (188 cm)
- Music Room grand (211 cm)
- Half-Concert grand (227 cm)
- Concert grand (274 cm)
